In May 2026, work on the GirSiko water pan was still at its earliest stage: a worker in a blue shirt, a mattock, and red soil being broken by hand. The photographs in this update record that stage as it was.
Water is a practical limit on livestock management here. The nearest reliable source is roughly ten kilometres away, so every additional animal adds to the amount that has to be stored or brought to the farm. The pan is intended to hold more water on site and reduce that dependence.
Hand excavation allows the work to move forward in stages. It also means progress is gradual. At the date of this update, the pan was not complete and there was no pump or reticulation system in place.
The team continues to manage the herd against the water currently available. Further updates will show the pan as the work changes, so an older photograph is never mistaken for its present condition.
